Not everyone can afford the cost of a renovation or a new home, but you can never go wrong when you cosmetically upgrade the interior and exterior of your home. Investing in the upkeep of your residence not only improves its appearance, but the overall appearance of your neighborhood. It can be cost efficient, simple and quick to do.

            On the exterior of your home, power washing the siding or brick can dramatically improve the appearance. Painting the fence, planting some colorful flowers and mulching the trees in your yard can add curbside appeal. The first thing most people focus on when approaching your home is your front door. Painting or staining your door is a simple low cost improvement that can highlight your entrance without the costly expense of replacement. Shutters are also a low cost item, pre-painted, easy to install and can change the appearance and style of a plain looking facade and enhance its charm. If your entrance walkway is in disrepair you can install brick pavers for a warm but elegant, country look. There are many styles, colors and shapes.

            The interior of your home may need a new coat of paint. You may want to consider some of the new color schemes available at your local paint or home improvement store. New carpet in the bedrooms or new rugs over a freshly scraped and polyurethaned hardwood floors in your living room and dining room can be a refreshing change. Upgrade the interior trim and add ornamental crossheads above the doorways. If you desire more light, have a larger window installed where you feel the interior can be enhanced by exterior views. Maybe it’s time for new kitchen appliances or modern bathroom fixtures. From new garage doors to installing a new lighting fixture, there are many things you can do to make your home more appealing without spending thousands of dollars.

Take a walk around your home and imagine what it would look like if you made a few minor changes. Just make yourself a list in the order you feel a repair or change is needed. These projects can be a lot of fun for you and your family and time together, well spent.

Home Video Surveillance Systems: How Does It Work?

The first video surveillance systems were used by large and medium-sized businesses to monitor for shop-lifting and to keep an eye on cash-handling areas. They have been very effective in identifying and prosecuting criminals. Today, though, more homeowners are installing video surveillance systems. Also called closed circuit TV (CCTV), home video surveillance systems allow homeowners to monitor specific areas and keep an eye on potential thieves, burglars, and vandals.

The monitor is the defining characteristics of video surveillance systems. It receives a live picture from the camera. Normally black and white, the monitors boast higher resolutions than most home televisions, standard resolutions being between 500 and 1000 lines.

Of course, the camera is an important component of the video surveillance system. During installation, the cameras are located strategically outside the home in vulnerable areas like entry ways, porticos, and where landscaping hides access to windows. For a more effective system, cameras should be placed where they are difficult to see. They work continuously, feeding images to the monitor either constantly or at timed intervals.

Coaxial cables tie the video surveillance systems together. Available in many different sizes from local electronics retailers, they transmit the video signal from camera to monitor. These cables come with the video surveillance systems, but there are times when extra longer cables must be purchased for far-away cameras.

Home video surveillance systems also include switchers that allow the user to hook up several cameras to one central monitor. Automated switchers normally cycle through camera stations until it detects movement. When that happens, they lock on the camera where movement has occurred to monitor possible security breaches.

Some home video surveillance systems can be used with VCRs to record the live video feeds. Particularly useful when the family is away on travel, the VCR can record a break-in as it happens, saving a picture of the criminal for later investigation and prosecution. Your home video surveillance system then provides a critical piece of evidence for law enforcement.

Home video surveillance systems make it possible to get the level of security for your home that, in the past, were available only to businesses with large security budgets. Today, they are so affordable that they are used in homes across the country.

If you’ve been looking for a way to better protect your home and belongings, a video surveillance system may be the way to go. One cautionary word: remember that video surveillance systems do not automatically sound an alarm or notify the police or fire department of emergencies when they occur. You’ll still want to have a reliable burglar alarm system. What they will do is provide a permanent image of the crime in progress to make arrest and prosecution more likely.

Your dermatologist may refer to them as acrochordons, papillomas, fibroepithelial polyps, filoform, or pedunculated benign moles, but most people refer to these bothersome blights as skin tags.

They are very simply an overgrowth or hyperplasia of the epidermis or outside layer of the skin. They often occur as you grow older and are usually most prominent in middle age. Nothing has been proven to cause them but some conditions, such as being overweight, are thought to encourage their growth. Insulin fluctuations are also thought to be one of the possible causes as well as high levels of growth factors such as during pregnancy.

Skin tags normally occur most often in the eyelid area, the upper chest, and the groin, although they may actually pop up pretty much anywhere you have skin, so that leaves a lot of real estate open.

There is no known prevention per se but what you can do is watch for them and when they start to appear (they appear first as a tiny bump), and then as soon as you can see a tag is forming with a small stalk that attaches it to the skin, snip it off with fingernail clippers or small scissors. It’s best to do this early because they larger you allow them to grow, the more painful the excision of them will be.

If you wait too long you may have to have them removed at an office visit to your dermatologist, which will of course cost you money and, quite simply, is just a bother. But if you do have them taken off they will normally either freeze them off or excise them. It’s fairly painless so not much to worry about.

So although skin tag causes can vary, they are not dangerous and not usually anything to be too worried about other than the cosmetic issues.
